The Ruins And The Theatre
The antique theatre in Kaunos is noteworthy in terms of its location and architecture. Situated on the west slope of the Acropolis, the theatre faces southwest, and seats 5 thousand people. It continues the tradition of the Hellenistic theatres as far as its plan concerned. It mostly leans on the two slopes behind it. The antique theatre has three sections: a stage, a backstage, and the seating rows. Rising in a circular pattern on a 27 degrees angle and a 75 m circumference, the viewers' section is divided into 9 sections with 8 staircases
Each seating section has 33 rows. These rows are divided into two sections with the help of walking corridors that divide the entire viewers' section horizontally. There is a semicircular vaulted passage that opens up directly to the walking corridors. These passages have the characteristics of the Roman era. The stage building positioned in front of the orchestra has the dimensions of 38.5 by 10.40, including the side venues. It used to be two stored. Its height never reached the upper level of the theatre.
The orchestra is partially covered up with soil. One of the ruins on the west of the theatre is the church building, and the others are the roman bath and the Temple. There is a podium elevated with three stairs behind the building that is laid in circular pattern, and has columns with no flutes. One can see the ruins of the temple here
The stoa was discovered during the excavations conducted north of the lake of Sülüklü, which used to be the port. Several statue pedestals were found, but not the statues themselves. The two fountains near the stoa on the other hand were restored
