The center of the castles where the most important buildings and the temples that were located was called the Acropolis in ancient cities. These regions generally used to be set on protected high elevations. The Kaunos castle is also positioned on a hill.

You can see the entire Antique City, Dalyan, Iztuzu coast, the whole Dalyan canal that runs between Dalyan and the Mediterranean, the fields, the gardens, and the forests in the vicinity. The east and south slope of the castle stretches like a steep cliff down the canal.

The double rowed city walls that surround the city were built in the 5th Century B.C. Judging by the shape of the doors, loopholes, and the canopies the castle was obviously repaired again during the Middle Age.
